ENSURING THE FUTURE

Originality deserves to be preserved.

The Motoring Radio Company is dedicated to the restoration and renewal of vintage automotive radios—preserving their character while making them dependable and enjoyable for today's motoring experience.

An original radio is more than a piece of electronic equipment. It is part of the automobile for which it was designed, reflecting the engineering, materials and design language of its era.

PRESERVE WHAT MATTERS

Every vintage radio carries something of its automobile's history.

Its face, controls, lettering, illumination and proportions were designed for a particular dashboard and a particular era. Where that character can be retained, we believe it should be.

RESTORE WHAT CAN BE RESTORED

Restoration is more than making an old radio operate again.

It begins with understanding how the radio was constructed, identifying deterioration or failure, and returning its essential functions while respecting its original design and construction.

The objective is simple: restore the radio, rather than replace it.

RENEW WHAT CAN BE BROUGHT FORWARD

Modern functionality does not necessarily require sacrificing the character of the original radio.

Where appropriate, features such as Bluetooth and improved amplification can be integrated discreetly, allowing the radio to remain part of the automobile while accommodating the way its owner wishes to enjoy it today.

THE RADIO.
THE AUTOMOBILE.
THE ERA.

A vintage automotive radio was never simply an electronic appliance.

It was designed to belong to a particular automobile, a particular dashboard and a particular moment in automotive history.

Its materials, controls, illumination and proportions formed part of the automobile's larger design language.

Preserving the radio means preserving that relationship.

The lettering on a dial. The texture of an original knob. The movement of a tuning needle. The illumination behind the face.

These details connect the radio to the automobile and its era.

Because sometimes the smallest details are what make an old automobile feel complete.

THE MOTORING RADIO COMPANY PHILOSOPHY

There is a difference between replacing something old and giving it another life.

Preservation begins with respect.

Before anything is changed, we consider what the radio is, how it was constructed and what makes it distinctive.

Restoration should be sympathetic rather than excessive. Not every original component needs to be replaced, and not every modern convenience needs to be added.

The right solution depends on the radio, the automobile and the owner's intentions.

The result should feel natural in the automobile—faithful to its era, dependable in operation and appropriate to the way its owner wishes to enjoy it today.

The work should always serve the radio, the automobile and the person who owns it.

THE RESTORATION PROCESS

Five stages, from the first assessment to the radio's return.

IASSESSMENT

Every radio begins with an assessment.

We establish the make, model and application and examine the radio's physical and electronic condition.

Previous repairs, modifications, missing components and evidence of deterioration are identified.

This allows us to understand what the radio requires before restoration begins.

IIRESTORATION

The radio is carefully examined and, where necessary, disassembled so that its individual systems can be assessed.

Electronic components are tested and addressed as required. Mechanical functions, controls, connections and other elements are inspected and repaired where possible.

Throughout the process, consideration is given to preserving the original construction and appearance.

IIIRENEWAL

For owners seeking contemporary functionality, renewal provides another option.

Where the particular radio permits, modern features such as Bluetooth connectivity can be integrated discreetly into the original unit.

The objective is not to make an old radio look modern.

It is to allow an original radio to remain part of the automobile while accommodating the way we listen today.

IVTESTING

Restoration does not end when the radio first comes to life.

The completed unit is tested to ensure that its repaired and renewed functions operate as intended.

Reception, audio performance, controls and other applicable functions are assessed before the radio is considered ready to return.

VRETURN

Once the work is complete, the radio is carefully prepared for its return to its owner.

It remains the original radio that belonged in the automobile.

Only now, it has been given another opportunity to be heard.

WHAT WE WORK ON

Vintage automotive radios were produced in remarkable variety, from early tube-operated instruments to later transistorized units.

We are interested in preserving these original systems rather than treating them as disposable components.

  • FACTORY-ORIGINAL RADIOSOriginal equipment designed specifically for a particular automobile, model or period.
  • RADIOS REQUIRING RENEWALOriginal units that owners wish to retain while incorporating carefully considered contemporary functionality.
  • PREVIOUSLY MODIFIED RADIOSUnits that have been repaired, altered or partially converted during their lifetime may require additional assessment before restoration.

If you are uncertain about your radio, that is not a problem.

Begin with the radio you have.

ORIGINALITY & MODERN FUNCTIONALITY

There is no single definition of a successful restoration.

For some owners, preserving the radio as close as possible to its original specification is the priority.

For others, the original appearance is essential, but modern audio connectivity allows the radio to be enjoyed more frequently.

Both approaches are valid.

Our objective is to help owners find the balance that best suits their automobile and their intentions.

What you see can remain original.
What you experience can belong to today.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS

CAN MY ORIGINAL RADIO BE RESTORED?

In many cases, yes. The first step is to assess the radio's condition, construction and history. Photographs are often enough to begin that conversation.

CAN I KEEP THE ORIGINAL APPEARANCE AND ADD BLUETOOTH?

Where the particular radio permits, modern functionality such as Bluetooth can sometimes be integrated discreetly while retaining the original appearance.

DO YOU REPLACE THE ORIGINAL RADIO WITH A MODERN UNIT?

Our focus is on restoring and renewing the original radio where appropriate, rather than replacing it with a modern unit.

WHAT IF MY RADIO HAS ALREADY BEEN MODIFIED?

Previously modified radios can often still be assessed. The extent and nature of the modifications will determine what can appropriately be restored or renewed.

I DON'T KNOW THE MAKE OR MODEL OF MY RADIO. CAN YOU HELP?

Absolutely. Photographs of the front, rear and any identifying markings are often enough for us to begin identifying the unit.

HOW DO I START?

Simply tell us about the radio and the automobile it belongs to. A few photographs and some basic information are often enough to begin.
